Getting Ready For Kindergarten
Hi Parents….here are a few ideas to get your child ready for Kindergarten…
- Help your child practice writing their name starting with a capital letter and then followed by lowercase letters. ie. Mary
- Have your child practice holding their pencil with a tripod grip (thumb, pointer finger and middle finger). Remind them to hold their pencil or felt near the bottom, and to use their superman strength especially when working with pencils or crayons. Also have your child start their letters and numbers from the top not the bottom.
- Start improving their fine motor strength by building with lego, playing with play dough, doing light bright, using squirt bottles.
- Let your child cut things out with safety scissors. Remind them that their thumb goes in the small hole of the scissors and their fingers in the larger hole. The thumb should be pointing to the ceiling when cutting and the helper hand turns the paper, the scissors should always point away from them when cutting.
- Start exposing them to alphabet through games, stories, DVD’s, apps on an Ipad or Android Tablet
- Practice numbers and counting
- Read…read…and read some more. The benefits are endless. When reading, engage your child in the story by asking them to predict what will happen next, or have them retell the story to you when you are done. Talk about their favorite part, and some of their favorite characters
- Help your child learn to open their own snack packages, turn lids to open things and how to zip the Ziploc bags closed. This will also increase their fine motor strength.
- Practice with your child zipping zippers, and buttoning buttons. If they have lace up shoes teach them how to tie their laces and practice with them.
Looking forward to learning together this year!!
My name is Jackie Watt and I have been part of this amazing community since 1991. I have the pleasure of teaching the Kindergarten students. I love the excitement and activity that goes along with teaching these 5 and 6 year olds. Making crafts, baking, building, and singing are just a few of the fun things we do in our classroom. It is exciting to watch the kids grow in their faith and their love for God as they learn about His Word.
